Endurance Produces Character

Paul describes a progression: suffering → perseverance → proven character → hope. Most of us would prefer to skip directly to hope. But character is often forged through processes we would not voluntarily choose. Patience develops because something makes us wait. Courage develops because something makes us afraid. Endurance develops because something becomes difficult. Forgiveness develops because somebody gives us something to forgive. We should never seek unnecessary suffering. But when difficulty comes, we can ask God to make us better rather than bitter. And Paul says hope does not disappoint because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit. Our hope remains anchored in God even while character is being formed.
