In the Beginning Was the Word

The story of Jesus does not begin in Bethlehem. John takes us further back: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Before creation, Christ already was. Everything that came into existence came into being through Him. This matters because Jesus cannot be reduced to an inspiring teacher, moral example or religious leader. The One who walked the roads of Galilee is the eternal Word through whom creation itself was made. When you come to Jesus, you are not merely coming to someone who has useful advice for your life. You are coming to your Creator and Lord. That changes discipleship. We do not simply add Jesus to an already established life and ask Him to improve it. He has rightful authority over the whole of it. Your ambitions. Relationships. Finances. Work. Body. Time. Future. Everything belongs under the lordship of the One through whom everything was created. And remarkably, this eternal Word would soon enter the world He made.
