“The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God.” Fear asks: Do I really belong? The gospel answers by pointing us away from our performance and toward God's saving work. Paul contrasts slavery producing fear with adoption producing relationship. The Spirit does not lead believers into a life of constant terror that one imperfect moment has removed them from God's family. At the same time, assurance is not permission to disregard holiness. The same Romans 8 that speaks about adoption also speaks about putting sinful practices to death. Secure children still learn obedience. But obedience flows from belonging rather than attempting to purchase belonging. There is a tremendous difference between: “I must make God accept me.” and: “Because I belong to God, I want to live as His daughter.” Let the second shape your discipleship.
Declare It Today
“I am not called to live as a slave to fear. Through Christ I belong to God's family, and the Holy Spirit bears witness to that truth. I will pursue obedience from a place of grace.”
Let's Pray
Holy Spirit, quiet the fear that makes me doubt God's grace whenever I stumble. Lead me quickly to repentance and continually back to Christ. Teach me to live confidently and obediently as God's daughter. Amen.
