The Word Became Flesh

“The Word became flesh, and lived among us.” The eternal Word did not merely appear human. He became flesh. John tells us that the One who existed before creation entered creation and dwelt among ordinary people. This is astonishing humility. The Creator entered the limitations of human life. The One worthy of heaven's worship walked dusty roads, sat at tables, touched the sick and welcomed people society overlooked. Jesus reveals that greatness in God's Kingdom does not resemble worldly obsession with status. The incarnation confronts our desire always to be impressive. Christ humbled Himself. So following Jesus will sometimes lead us toward places the world considers beneath us: serving unnoticed, caring for inconvenient people, choosing obedience over applause. If the Son of God was willing to come near, we cannot build Christian lives around remaining comfortably distant from people's needs.
