Paul prayed three times for his “thorn in the flesh” to be removed. God did not remove it. Instead, He said: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” This passage protects us from a damaging idea: that sufficient faith always produces the outcome we request. Paul had faith. Paul prayed. And God's answer was different from Paul's preference. Sometimes faith receives the miracle. Sometimes faith receives sufficient grace. Both require trust. An unanswered request is not automatic evidence that you failed spiritually. There are mysteries we may not understand. But God's grace can sustain us even when His answer is not the one we wanted. There comes a point when mature faith asks not only: “God, will You remove this?” but also: “If You do not, will You show me how to remain faithful?”
