Pause & Reflect
“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.” That is one of the great declarations of the gospel. Condemnation says: “You are guilty, and judgment remains upon you.” The gospel announces that for those who are in Christ, the verdict has changed because Christ has dealt with sin. This does not mean sin no longer matters. Romans 8 immediately moves into life according to the Spirit. Grace does not make holiness irrelevant. It makes holiness possible from a new position. The believer does not pursue transformation as a condemned person desperately trying to earn acquittal. She pursues transformation as someone who belongs to Christ. When you sin, conviction should lead you toward repentance. Condemnation pushes you toward hiding and hopelessness. Learn to distinguish them. The Holy Spirit exposes sin in order to turn you back toward God. The gospel tells you where you stand: in Christ.
Declare It Today
“There is no condemnation for me in Christ Jesus. I will respond to conviction with repentance, but I refuse to live under a verdict Christ has already removed.”
Let's Pray
Father, thank You for the freedom found in Christ. Holy Spirit, convict me faithfully when I sin and lead me into repentance. Protect me from shame that drives me away from God, and teach me to live from my identity in Christ. Amen.
