Do Not Quench the Spirit

Day 81

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE

1 Thessalonians 5:19–22

Pause & Reflect

Paul gives two instructions that belong together: “Don't quench the Spirit.” and “Test all things. Hold firmly that which is good.” This is wonderfully balanced. We are not called to cynical unbelief that dismisses everything spiritual. Neither are we called to gullibility that accepts every claim made in God's name. We need openness and discernment. Do not quench. Do test. Do hold onto what is good. Reject what is evil. A mature Spirit-filled church—and a mature Spirit-filled woman—does not fear biblical examination. Truth can withstand testing. When someone says, “God told me,” we are not required to switch off discernment. We test teaching and spiritual claims according to Scripture. The Holy Spirit does not need us to protect falsehood in order to honour Him.

Declare It Today

“I will remain open to the Holy Spirit while practising biblical discernment. I will test spiritual claims, hold firmly to what is good and reject what contradicts God's truth.”

Let's Pray

Holy Spirit, keep me from both cynicism and gullibility. Give me discernment rooted in Scripture and humility to recognise Your genuine work. Help me hold firmly to what is good. Amen.
